Rhythms of Contrast in Bocchino and Yoo's Dialogue
Between Movement and Stillness
Serena Bocchino & Yoo Choong Mok
May 29 – June 30, 2025
Opening Reception: May 29, 6–8 PM
This May, AP Space presents Between Movement and Stillness, a duo exhibition featuring works by American artist Serena Bocchino and Korean artist Yoo Choong Mok. Though their practices stem from different cultural and material traditions, both artists share a fascination with rhythm, balance, and the subtle space where energy meets calm.
Gallery AP Space, located in Chelsea, New York, is committed to highlighting thoughtful, contemporary work that sparks conversation and brings together global perspectives. With each exhibition, the gallery strives to create a space for dialogue, between artists, materials, and viewers.
In this exhibition, Serena Bocchino brings her signature visual language, shaped by a lifelong engagement with music, especially jazz. Her layered compositions, often created with enamel paint, graphite, and mixed media, echo improvisation and movement. Bocchino’s approach is informed in part by synesthesia, resulting in paintings that feel alive with rhythm. She has exhibited extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, with work included in the collections of the Bronx Museum, the Museo Italo Americano, the St. Louis Art Museum, and more. Her career has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Art Matters Award.
Yoo Choong Mok’s work takes a quieter, more meditative path. Using glass as his primary medium, he creates compositions that reflect on memory, identity, and the shifting nature of time. His recent series centers around glass droplets set against wood or canvas, subtly shifting depending on the light and the viewer’s perspective. Inspired by traditional Korean colors and architectural motifs, Yoo weaves elements of cultural heritage into a contemporary visual language. He has studied and worked in both Korea and the UK, and his pieces have been shown and collected internationally. Among his accolades are the NICHE Award and the Grand Prize from the National Glass Center.
Between Movement and Stillness brings these two voices into conversation, one dynamic and expressive, the other grounded and reflective. Together, they explore what it means to move, to pause, and to find presence in both.
Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, May 29, from 6 to 8 PM.
